The Conductor

A conductor leads a team of musical experts to perform beautiful and complex masterpieces.

He provides enough direction to the team as a whole so that each member knows their place in relation to others, the timing and rhythm of execution, and where the team as a whole is headed.

Can you imagine if a conductor stepped down from their podium and began randomly picking up instruments in the middle of a performance? (micromanagement)

Can you imagine if a conductor sat down in the audience, completely detaching themselves from the experience? (aloofness)

The show might go on for some period time, but a catastrophic failure in either case would be impending and inevitable.

A well-functioning team is led by a conductor that knows the power behind a vision, inspiring their team members to collaborate, cooperate, and unlock their own power to solve problems.

This conductor may be an expert in one instrument, but the usefulness of this focused skill has passed—he cannot be an expert in all instruments.

How are you enabling the members of your team to showcase their mastery?

How do you balance between too much control, and too little?
